John Singer Sargent, Venice: Under the Rialto Bridge
John Singer Sargent, Venice: Under the Rialto Bridge, 1909.
I recently went to see John Singer Sargent Watercolors at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. What struck me - besides his genius with paint, light and the sheer volume of work he produced - were his compositions. Here, in Under the Rialto Bridge, 1909, while every other painter was working on the bridge, getting the same vantage point of the buildings and water, he went under the bridge. Right above the water, in the shadows, he captured something no one else even thought of.
